Many patients are anxious before a tooth extraction and often ask an unsettling question:

Can tooth extraction cause eyesight loss? The simple answer to it is

No, tooth extraction does NOT cause loss of eyesight or even affect eyesight in any way.

Every doubt has a source-this is yours:

A Tooth for an Eye? The Myth That Won’t Die!

The idea that tooth extraction can affect eyesight doesn’t come from a single documented source, it grew out of a mix of old beliefs, misunderstood anatomy, and real but rare complications that people tried to explain before modern science.
Ancient systems saw the body as interconnected, so teeth and eyes were believed to influence each other. Later, confusion about the Trigeminal nerve, the major nerve, which supplies sensation to the face, led people to assume dental procedures could impact vision.

In the past, severe untreated dental infections sometimes spread toward the sinus or eye area. Add coincidence and fear of dental procedures, and the idea stuck.

Are Teeth and Eyes Connected? Science Explains the Truth

Teeth and eyes are NOT directly connected.

  • Different nerves, separate functions.

Teeth are supplied by → Trigeminal nerve, carries pain, touch, temperature stimuli from teeth and face

Eyes by → Optic nerve, carries visual signals from retina to brain.

  • No direct Anatomical Connection:

The Sinus lies close to the upper teeth on either side of our face, which in turn is very close to the orbit, the part that encloses the eyeball.  When vision issues followed, people linked them directly to tooth removal. But the orbit is separated by bone and soft tissue barriers, thereby indicating there is no direct pathway connecting a tooth socket to the visual apparatus.

Upper molar and wisdom tooth removal doesn’t affect eyesight , so why do some people feel eye discomfort afterward?

In rare cases, patients may feel:

  • Mild eye pain
  • Heaviness around eye
  • Temporary watering

Reasons include:

  • Swelling spreading to nearby tissues due to untreated infections
  • Sinus involvement (upper teeth)
  • Local anaesthesia effect
  • Pre-existing sinus infection
  • Referred pain – Due to shared nerve network and the interproximity of nerves, the brain may misinterpret the pain location, which is known as referred pain.

Dispelling the Myth

From a scientific viewpoint, there is no direct anatomical or physiological connection between upper tooth extractions and vision problems. The nerves and blood vessels supplying the teeth and eyes are separate. While sinus issues related to dental infections when left untreated may spread and cause discomfort in the facial region, the extraction itself does not affect eye function

Final Thoughts

While the idea that upper tooth extractions can affect the eyes is a fascinating one, it’s the one rooted in misunderstandings and myths. The connection lies not in the eyes themselves, but rather in the nearby sinuses and referred pain. The interconnection of facial anatomy thereby signifies symptoms can overlap.
